What kind of place is Tamamura Town, Gunma?
Gunbaiyama
Tamamuracho is a small town with a long history and a university.
Tamamura Town is located in the southern part of Gunma Prefecture, belonging to the Sawa District in the Chubu region. It is bordered by Maebashi City to the north, Takasaki and Fujioka Cities to the west, Isesaki City to the east, and the town of Shinmachi in Takasaki City and Kamisato Town in Saitama Prefecture to the south. The population is approximately 36,000, with about 16,000 households (as of September 2022).
Tamamura Town has long been known as a post town along the Nikko Reihai Route, with settlement development believed to have started around the early 4th century. There are 143 ancient burial mounds discovered within the town, indicating a deep connection with the Yamato regime. The current form of Tamamura Town began with the implementation of the city and town system in 1889. It merged with Shibane Village in 1955 and with Kamiyo Village in 1957, incorporating parts of Gunan Village and Gunan Village Itai to become what it is today.
The climate is characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with chilling north winds. Multiple rivers, including the Tone River, Karasu River, Taki River, and Fuji River, flow through the area, which is mostly flat. The town hosts the annual Tamamura Fireworks Festival in mid-July, where approximately 10,000 fireworks light up the night sky, attracting around 40,000 visitors from neighboring areas.
Once thriving in the sericulture industry, Tamamura Town now has a strong industrial presence with food factories and industrial parks. The town has a complete educational system, including elementary, middle, and high schools, with a notable prefectural high school and Gunma Prefectural Women’s University. Given its rich history, there are many shrines and burial mounds scattered throughout the town, as well as the remains of the Goryo Barrier, making it a popular spot for history enthusiasts. Local specialties include strawberries, broccoli, and Joshu beef.

How is the traffic situation in Tamamura Town?
Tomo Regional Trunk Road
Tamamura-cho: a town without a train station but with convenient expressways and national roads
Tamamura Town does not have any train lines, so to use the train, residents must travel to the adjacent Shinmachi Station on the JR East Takasaki Line in Takasaki City to the south.
Buses operated by Nagai Bus and Gunma Chuo Bus provide transportation for the townspeople.
Main roads include National Route 354 and Gunma Prefectural Routes 11, 24, and 40, as well as the Kanetsu Expressway.
While the Kanetsu Expressway has the Takasaki-Tamamura Smart IC, it is only accessible via ETC (Electronic Toll Collection).
Additionally, the Kanetsu Takasaki IC, Kita-Kanto Maebashi Minami IC, and Joshinetsu Fujioka IC are also relatively easy to access.
Due to the area’s multiple rivers, travel to neighboring cities and towns typically involves crossing bridges.
There is a well-developed bus system, which allows access not only within the town but also to neighboring cities, making it very convenient for people without a car.
There is no train station, so if you want to take the train you will need to travel to a station in a nearby area.
How are the rent and land prices in Tamamura Town?

In Tamamura Town, the average rent for apartments and condominiums (as of September 2022) is approximately 41,000 yen.
This area has a relatively good supply of rental properties, including nationwide one-room apartments.
Breaking down the average by room type, a 1R to 1K averages around 35,000 yen, while a 1DK to 2DK averages about 45,000 yen. Even larger properties, such as 2LDK to 3DK, can be found for around 48,000 yen, making it possible to find decent properties within a budget of 50,000 yen.

The price around Shimonitta is between 114,000 and 142,000 yen per tsubo, while Kamimotegi and Kamishinden are both about 108,000 yen per tsubo, and Fukushimacho is around 106,000 yen per tsubo.
Since the population began to decline in 2005, the number of vacant homes in Tamamura Town has been increasing.
As a response, the town has implemented the Tamamura Town Vacant House Bank to promote migration and settlement.
Housing prices generally hover around 20 million yen, with properties exceeding 30 million yen being limited based on their age.
The average housing prices, including rent, are relatively low compared to areas in the central part of the prefecture, meaning that housing-related financial burdens in this area are minimal.
