Located in the eastern part of Gunma Prefecture, Kiryu City is bordered by Numata City to the north, Maebashi City to the west, Isesaki City and Ota City to the south, and Ashikaga City in Tochigi Prefecture to the east. Kiryu City is split into two parts, as if there are two Kiryu Cities, with Midori City located between them. In June 2005, the former Kiryu City merged with Niisato Village and Kurohone Village, resulting in an east-west division, where the west side is an enclave.
Historically, Kiryu City dates back to the Nara period and is known as a production area for Kiryu textiles. Even today, traditional craftsmanship in textiles remains a strong industry. A famous historical site is Houtokuji Temple, known for its “floor maples,” where the polished floor reflects the beautiful maple trees. Built around 1450 during the Muromachi period, the temple attracts many visitors from across the country.
